And I'd rather have another Clinton than another Jackson. Manly, perhaps. But Jackson was also kind of a dick.
We have a tendency to idolize the shit out of our past while condemning the present. Is that kind of old-fashioned masculinity really that important of a quality for a world leader to have, though?

It's a Criminal Code offence in Canada to either challenge someone to, or accept, a duel.

More a sign of the times than anything else as far as Jackson's incident is concerned. Although I do believe he was a very tough individual.
I agree with what you are saying as far as time shining a positive light on people, and Clinton is a good example of that. He is already very well thought of which wasn't always the case during his time as president.
Toughness, however, is a very important quality for a world leader to have.

Duelling 71. Every one who (a) challenges or attempts by any means to provoke another person to fight a duel, (b) attempts to provoke a person to challenge another person to fight a duel, or (c) accepts a challenge to fight a duel, is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years.

I think the toughness that our leaders need these days is less physical and more mental and ethical.

No doubt. I would say mentally tough people are considered "tough' by the standards of both past and present. I think when most people use the term tough they are typically referring to mental toughness.

Agreed. It wasn't Teddy's physical toughness that makes the bullet incident impressive. By all accounts the wound wasn't all that serious. But the balls it takes for a man to know he's been shot in the chest and decide to give an hour-long speech anyway--that's impressive. Mental toughness for sure.

Even if the shooter had completely missed by a mile, most people would say "fuck the speach" and hide the rest of the day. I've been near a shooting and although the bullets were far away from me and I wasn't being shot at, it was still fucking scary.
