Supressor, doing it right (aka legally)

I'm curious about getting a suppressor for my (soon to be purchased) bushmaster. Can anyone shed light on the procedure/requirements? Is it a state-by-state thing or a federal thing?
I assume, but want to make sure that the 223 suppressor will work for the 22 when I swap out the bolt and mag, right?

Have to get a federal tax stamp and get the suppressor engraved; and live in a state that allows them is the simple answer. You will end up spending more than your bushie cost

Hmm the suppressor you buy should already be engraved. For a simple civilian there's two ways about doing the paperwork. The first option is to file it for yourself which requires fingerprints, photos, and a signature from a sheriff/judge. The second option is to make the item the property of a trust. I personally paid a lawyer to draft mine instead of generating a generic living will/trust because the lawyer I chose uses very specific nfa/firearms language throughout. If you own a corporation or have a LLC you can make the suppressor property of those too. Fill out the correct form with your paperwork and send a check for $200 to the BATFE.

Once your paperwork is filed if you buy out of state you'll have to have it transferred to your local class iii dealer and it'll sit there for 6-7 months until your stamp comes back in the mail. Once you have your stamp its yours. That's the easiest way I can explain it. You'll have to double check whether or not there's a transfer fee to get one out of state and into your state if you buy out of state. You'll also have to check to see which exact forms you'll need to file with the BATFE.

I sent my stuff out for my SBR back in March and got my stamp back in October.

I didn't think suppressors needed engraved (with owner's name), I thought that was just SBR's. Here's a link with some basic info.

Sure thing. In my opinion the Trust is the way to go. I did that for all of my NFA items. Avoiding the fingerprinting and CLEO approval justifies it. Plus with the trust you've already taken care of the disposition of the items in case something happens to you.

I used the Quicken Willmaker program for my trust and it passed ATF standards, both initially and when I added to it.

Yeah the suppressors should already be engraved by the company that makes them.

Oh, I was confused then. Isn't it SBR's that you need to engrave the name of the owner on them?
