Beastly.
Im doing a slow bulk to 150, going for 200 pounds without resembling a marshmellow seems like a impossible feat.

I'm about 5% BF right now... I don't think I'll be looking like a total marshmellow anytime soon. I'd much rather look like matt serra, than this. I'm built like a diaz brother for goodness sakes...

I'm currently in the process of being able to relate. I used to be 6' 3" 155 lbs, now I'm 172ish and gaining weight. I feel a lot better in everyday life and more confident. It's always a little ego boost when people I know tell me I've gotten more muscular.

I went from fat to wanting to be skinny... Restricted calories, plyometrics etc.
Discovered lifting and changed my goals. I don't care about being skinny. I want to be stronger. I still eat healthy, just don't starve myself.
My roommate made fun of me for changing my mind.

I am the opposite, and I also don’t like that his weight is his goal.
I had that goal for a while and found much better results when real things became my goals, ie lift that , be able to do that.
Of course weight came with the training but I don’t think getting heavier is a great goal, but getting stronger (which includes getting heavier most likely) is a great goal.
I started training at 136 or so, being 6’1-2” so you get the picture.
I got to 185 in about 15 months, but was constantly getting small injuries, this didn’t stop me. Whgat stopped me was my best mates mum saying “You look strange, this weight doesn’t suit you” and she was right, it didn’t suit me.
So I lost some weight, which I did by not going to the gym but eating as much as I liked. Soon I had no more injuries, including persistent ones going away.
Then I started thinking what I really want to be is the most useful person I can be. That basically when I got into MMA. Friggin love it.
Right now about 165, strong as I have ever been, feel great and life is good. 6 days a week I have training to look forward to and I really do look forward to each part of it, be it BJJ, Striking, strength, conditioning whatever. The level of effort I put into MMA is tiny compared to what I put into weights etc, Yet I train harder and longer for mma because that is no effort cause I do it for fun and for goals.
To be clear I couldn't have really done MMA at my original weight, nor at my heaviest, it is all about balance to me.

Sounds like you weren't weight training correctly then.
Also why listen to your friend's mum?
