Bret had the idea for a spot where Shawn would put him in the sharpshooter, and Bret would trip him up and reverse the hold into his version. This would be the cause of the initial run in(HHH) which would cause the next run in (Bulldog/Owen) etc etc etc.
Yup, this was how it was to play out and end in a DQ.

Yay, let's change wrestling history. Sorry buddy, you are wrong about everything BUT the last couple sentences .
WCW offered Bret a 3-year $9million GUARANTEED contract and Vince offered Bret a 20 contract for significantly less money (said to be a minimum guarantee of $750K as an active wrestler and then somewhere around $500K once he retired and worked in an office position). So realistically, if Bret wrestled another 20 years for the WWE at $750K, he'd make $15million over that 20 year period. Or he could've gone to WCW and work 3 years for $9million. Guess what? Bret decided to stay loyal to Vince and signed with Vince.
The truth is, if Bret wanted to be an ass, Bret could have just held Vince to the original contract and Vince wouldn't be able to do a thing. Vince came to Bret pleading that he could no longer afford the contract and asked Bret to null the contract and ask if WCW could still offer Bret what was originally offered. Bret even said they could renegotiate and Bret was willing to take less money but Vince said he couldn't do it. That's the story. Bret LET VINCE OFF THE HOOK. If Bret had Shawn's attitude AT THE TIME, Bret simply could've just said no and Vince would have to honor the contract.
As far as Bret/HBK, this has been done to death but fact still stands, if it was anyone else, they wouldn't have dropped it to HBK either. As in their Rivalry DVD, Shawn admitted that Bret's recollection of the events leading up to Montreal and Bret's refusal to drop the belt to Shawn, was indeed correct and FACTUAL; Shawn said flat out infront of other talent that he appreciated Bret dropping the title to him but he would never do the same for Bret.
With all that said, yes, Bret needs to stop crying about it and he has been better about it in the last few years.

Cople of things:
Bret did have a contract, It wasn't that he wanted more money. He had a legal contract.
Vince wanted Bret to lose to HBK before leaving for WCW. Part of it was the belt but more importantly the losing of the belt clean to HBK was the issue. In retrospect, Bret did have a contract and McMahon wanted out of it-- Bret is kinda right.
Vince had a history of screwing the Hart family. He "bought" Stu Hart's Calgary territory for one million dollars at 100k a year payments with Stu getting a small percentage of the gate. After a year, Vince cancelled the deal becasue he wasn't drawing that well in Calgary. The fans didn't buy the cartoon WWF vs what they used to: Believable tough guys and great workrate. Old man Stu had to start over from scratch to try to pay his bills.
Creative control was included in Bret's contract.
Over the years I have softened on Bret (I still and not a big fan of his) and think he was more right than wrong in this.

Yes. That is why I have softened my stance on Bret. He has been better.
Just one big clusterfuck. Like I said he was more right than wrong and my position has evolved over the years on him. Still think he is overrated (no offense, just my opinion.)

Speaking of the screwjob, it's a pretty weird feeling playing through that in WWE 13. Considering that the rest of the Attitude Era mode is you "pretending" to be various characters and they cut into this "real" moment with an awkward backstage scene of Vince and DX talking about Bret not being willing to "do business".
How is WWE 13? I havent bought a wrestling game in so long, but this one intrigues me for some reason...
Horrible.
Bunch of Bret nuthuggers up in this bitch. Can't admit he was a bitch ass ***** and a selfish bastard who didn't want to drop the title. Guy is wrestlings biggest crybaby. Not only does he still bitch about Montreal, he also complains about Goldberg giving him a concussion. Gee Bret, it wouldn't have been career ending if you weren't a fucking retard to begin with. Guy is the worlds biggest Bret Hart mark. Fuck him.
