I used to work out at a city rec center. At least once a week, there was a group of bros, 4 guys, that spent 50+ minutes on the bench press, doing nothing but bench. I was amazed.
Personally, I don't like those exercises, dead lift and squat. I mostly just use dumbbells and body weight exercises. It makes me feel faster / healthier. I'll just try not to fight anyone twice my strength without poking out their eye right away.
I think I got my fill of dead lifting as a paramedic, picking 600-800 pound people up off the floor (;

Run that 2x a week. Other option is starting strength. Great book, goes indepth on proper technique for each of the lifts. If you need a more detailed response head over to S&C.

Maybe a combination or heavy work for the lower body + shoulders and explosive lifts like clean, snatch would benefit you better.
Elastic bands are great for boxing too.
If you could find outdoor space, some olympic shots would help you as well...

i was running a 5,3,1 over a 3 day split, then a 2 day split. I was getting fairly good strength gains, but i felt like it was taking away from my boxing training a bit. Too tense / stiff from the lifts and what not. I've had a few weeks where i've been too busy to do the strength days, and i actually feel looser and faster without them. Possibly just perception.

I've felt the same. I did 5x5 Strong Lifts for 4 months and it made me feel fat and slow. I think lifting heavy maybe once a week is about good, and the rest of the time I do body weight exercises, dumbbells and so on. To each their own though. Some people lift heavy and become faster and more agile just from it alone. I've always found that amazing (a little jealous) but you have to do what works for you.

Good advice, yeah the bench was a benchmark.. I've been doing some deadlifts and Olympic lifts and squats but nowhere near as heavy as suggested in the reading. Gonna get myself a fresh box o protein and sort a schedule out.
I'd held off as I wanted to maintain striking speed and I thought that would be compromised but seems I was mistaken. Also I'd got big for amateur football but ruined my cardio, stripped the weight now and trained like a bitch and cardio is great, didn't want to ruin that either.
I got the time to fit in the heavy stuff, annoyingly it looks like I'm gonna have to hit a gym to do it safely (squats particularly), more expense. Ah well.

You can lift heavy for boxing, but you should concentrate on ballistic exercises, instead of the typical PL routines

This market you should be able to find one cheap. I go to a big fine gym and only pay 10 bucks a month.

TS -- I have read a lot of mixed messages on here in terms of how people are lifting. I don't think everyone who replies to this question is necessarily competing. A lot of people on here who talk about lifting in terms of competing all mention bodyweight exercises -- pullups, pushups, dips, core, bodyweight squats/lunges. Also when using weights, the recommended advice I received at my gym was putting a lower amount of weight on the bar and doing higher reps (i.e. do not bench anything that you can't do sets of 25). Nothing sucks more in a sparring session than having sore shoulders from lifting too heavy of weight. I found when I moved to body weight exercises that sore shoulders weren't really an issue for me anymore.
