Muay Thai in America

Is American MT closer to European-style in terms of good mix of punching and kicking or closer to trad. Thai with less emphasis on punching and more on kicks and knees?

It all depends on the individual and his school/gym/trainers. There really isn't a characteristic "American" style of MT yet.

I dont know. But i dont think Muay Thai in america is big enough to have own style.

If i had to guess, i would think that there are split between clubs that try to emulate the real thai style, and the clubs that are former kickboxing converted to kickboxing with knees and lowkicks.

From what I've seen, 95% of the places are closer to Dutch Style.

I'm in California and there are plenty of actual Thai trainers in LA and the bay area. So it's a traditional based style. As others said above, the US muay Thai scene isn't quite old enough to have a "American" style. Our fighters are big, which is what all my thai trainers always told me.

One thing I can tell you from being a member at a few gyms now over the years, is that it's rare for any adult male to come from a pure MT background like me. By pure I mean MT is the first striking art I studied. Most guys I know started in western boxing or karate or tkd

Waikru has 4 krus. One of the dudes told me they need to go Thailand and get certified by the Thai government and study for a year. Just what I was told. We also have a Thai guy who is a bad ass. He might of said he went to pro pramuk. I don't know why you would do k1 style when you can use all the strikes of full mt rules in mma.is anyone in america trying to do k1 anyway?

It is rare to see an American muay thai gym with a good clinching.
