giorgio petrosyan breakdown

Can anyone help me break down giorgio petrosyan I've been studying him a lot recently as a southpaw myself and just wanted to see what everyone on here would say his personal pros and cons are when he fights? What he does good and what he does bad? Anyone? Thank you

Pros:

- Really smart figher
- uses angles a lot
- really sharp boxing
- Counter Puncher
- Best left straight in Kickboxing

Cons:

no idea. maybe seems to struggle with thai style fighters.

I love his step-through knee he lands to the body of his opponents. I have no idea how it constantly works for him but every time he tries it, it seems to land. This man is a treat to watch.

He has a good understanding of distance. it is not necessary to evade attacks by a whole lot, but by only what is necessary. He displays this principle aptly. Moreover, the distance between him and his opponent remains constant. he either retreats or moves to the side the same amount his opponent moves forward. He also makes good use of parries, which is hardly seen amongst others these days.

he always says that he "fight with his head".
he fights like a chessplayer, he never does random things, he doesn't waste shots and he always know what's going on... so he can anticipate the opponent.

you don't see him using pre-set combos at random... like fast 1-2-3-kick without thinking.

I think that he's winning because his opponents don't train/understand defense like he does. He's the only one in K1 scene using footwork and angles like he does.Dutch fighters are aggressive and dangerous, but against a solid and smart counter fighter like him, it's hard to win.

In an interview he said that his favourite fighter/inspiration is Samart... and probably just one like Samart could beat him now.

As everyone else has said his main weapon is his understanding of distance and his use of footwork and angles.

He has no real "weaknesses" other than brittle hands.

In terms of all time great status, even though they fought under different rule sets Samart was taller pound for pound, had more one shot KO power and timed his teep better although Giorgio can put combo's together more as opposed to throwing one shot at a time.

He doesn't kick as fast as say prime Danny Bille, Buakaw or Samkor. There are also fighter's who can shade him in the hand speed department although he's no slouch there.

I also like to watch Petrosyan and try to copy some of his moves. He throws the lead southpaw hook over the top of his opponents jabs very well.He slips outside the right cross and counters with the left cross. He shoulder rolls away from left hooks. He kicks his opponent rear leg any chance he can get he usually sets it up with a left uppercut or cross followed by a lead hook then the left low kick.He also has one really nice trick where he throws a left uppercut, right hook then he pivots outside and around his (orthodox)opponents lead leg and throws whatever he wants(usually a cross)as his opponent turns to face him.He sometimes throws a really nice Naseem Hamed style lead uppercut which he used to ko one of his opponents. He is also right handed according to one of his coaches so that powerful lead uppercut shouldn't be much of a surprise. When not countering his go to move is the lead hook to left cross.

Those are the main things I try copy from him while sparring/competing though Im sure there are many more things that I have missed. As far as his cons go I cant really think of anything lol.

Edit- as agieman pointed out he is really good with his step through knee.According to Jack Slacks first book he sets it up by covering his (orthodox)opponents lead hand with his own and pushing his opponents right hand into his head with his left. While doing this he steps his lead leg outside of his opponents and lands that hard left knee.Though I have seen him use other ways to set it up too.

Technically, Gevorg is P4P the best kickboxer on the scene, rarely loses rounds, so it's not really relevant to talk about flaws ... The only sort of fighter that gives him a run for his money is one that fights like him: evasive, no set patterns, complete game with strong kicks, clinch and knees, extraordinary timing.
