SKS shoots 7.62x39, is cheap, accurate, runs all day, easy to maintain

I don't think the place I went to had any SKS because another person behind the counter said to look into an SKS.
I will admit, my dad had a M1 Garand Tanker Carbine that went, missing, when his father passed away that he has always talked of replacing and the little Mini M14 we saw today looked almost just like what he used to have just with a black stock and not made from wood.

I'm at such a crossroads here.
Shotgun? Remington 870 I'm familiar with from work but the Mossberg semi-auto intrigues me.
Rifle? M4 equivalent? Anybody know of models that for sure can take 5.56 and .223?

If it's chambered for 5.56 you can shoot both.

Almost certainly (like .357/.38) but I like absolutes.

From my understanding if you have a rifle chambered in 5.56 you can safely use .223 ammunition, but there are those who suggest that if the rifle is chambered in .223 that you should not use the 5.56 ammunition.
Below is a link to consider on the subject, though you can likely dig up more.

If you paid less than a grand for it and it's not a Colt...even if it says 5.56mm I wouldn't trust it. DPMS and others are known for not being 5.56 even when they say it.
