GSP using the can opener to open the guard?

I never thought a champ would use such a basic technique to open the guard. He is leaving himself way open to armbars. Is the can opener effective in mma if you're not GSP?

I'm kinda surprised he used it to.It's an old technique that back in the day,early 2000's you could submit people with it. However GSP would not use it if he didn't think it could be useful. He knows jiu jitsu very well,so he knows how to use it without getting armbarred.

If I have trouble opening an opponents guard, I will often bait them with faking an Ezekiel or something similar. I KNOW they will want to go for the arm, so I am prepared to instantly move once I feel the guard open. It's definitely a feeling out process and this seems to be what gsp did.

When you're a black belt in BJJ, have superlative wrestling ability, and have one of the best top games in MMA, you can afford to "break the rules."

Besides, it IS a valid way to open guard, albeit risky. If anything, it served as good bait for Condit to open up.

It seemed like he was also using it to get in position to throw elbows from inside the guard.

Not sure if you guys are serious but anyway;

If you want to strike while you are in someones guard you need to create some space and going to the can opener position is good. You have decent balance and it gives you space to throw punches.

The chance of getting an armbar against a sweaty, strong and aware oponent isn't very high at all and if you fail you have opened your guard which gives the guy on top a very good position to strike from.

So can opener position from top;
- Nice striking position
- Good balance
- Takes away some of the movement for the bottom guy
- You know the only thing the guy on the bottom can do is armbars so you are prepared for that.

Can opener from bottom;
- Getting punched in the face
- harder to break posture
- You can go for armbars with the chance of losing the guard control and get punched even worse.

___

Tito Ortiz usually go for this position and he is famous for his GnP.

This isn't Gi jiu jitsu. this is mma. guys are shirtless and there is a lot of sweat and there are punches and plenty of other factors tat make the chnace of gsp getting armbarred slim

Are you sure he was going for the can opener that often? I thought his hands were mostly on his condit's shoulders instead of aroudn the head. my streams quality wasn't the best though
