A medium coffee from Starbucks can be anywhere from 290 to 550mg of caffeine, depending on the brewing process. I've yet to see/try an energy drink with anything close to 500mg.

According to a study published in the journal Pediatrics, the total amount of caffeine contained in some cans or bottles of energy drinks “can exceed 500 mg (equivalent to 14 cans of common caffeinated soft drinks) and is clearly high enough to result in caffeine toxicity.” .
Thats freaking crazy. If you drink two a day and just happen to roll the dice wrong you could get a gram of caffeine.

I'm guessing some of these companies aren't being consistent with their caffeine dosages per can.

Not as much as I used to be, but I consider myself a bit of an energy drink connaisseur. Most of the ones I've had do state the amount of caffeine on the can somewhere, and to have 500mg, they gotta be talking about the 24oz cans. Even a 24oz NOS would be like 330 or so, IIRC.
The article even says that most of the problems people have come not from a caffeine OD, but from mixing it with alcohol.

This is the problem with trying to protect the majority from the stupidity of the minority...

apparently, there isn't a warning on the cans that says "do not mix with alcohol." i think the energy drink companies can afford to add those 5 words

it just seems to me that while yes, it is up to the individual to not be an idiot and do stupid things, i can see how someone would think mixing energy drinks and alcohol wouldn't hurt, what with people talking about jager bombs and shit. i just think that those 5 little words couldn't hurt the company at all, and it would help some people be less stupid.

plus i don't want to see them get sued, cause i love them.
