I think the question was what should he study to transition into MMA, not whether he should join a gym or not.
It's true that you shouldn't get deep into technique without guidance, but there are plenty of basics to familiarize yourself with before you just go get your ass beat in an MMA gym
What kind of shady ghetto gym do you go to? I've never even heard of an MMA gym that lets beginners get beat up.

How do you expect to get into MMA if theres nowhere that teaches it around where you live? You asked the best way to transition into it, but failed to mention there isnt any MMA gyms so its kind of hard to advise you apart from tell you to either move somewhere that does have gyms or be willing to travel to wherever it takes. But that all depends how much you want to do it, or if its just a hobby

I'm moving in a couple of months next to an mma gym so I need something to learn until I move.
