You have to wonder though: at what point does the average American think that these sorts of atrocities are outweighed by the general notion that people NEED guns to protect themselves?
Is it not a perpetual cycle? Why not ban guns so that you don't need to pack heat to protect yourself from the next gun nut?
I was in North America earlier this year and couldn't believe that you could walk into a shop and buy a gun and a bottle of Jack in the same place. They sell guns in our equivalent of K-Mart.
I think Brendan Vera summed it up perfectly when I met him at a seminar he was holding at my old gym:
Brandon: "Sure, I love Australia, but your gun laws suck. You can't get guns at all here!"
Me: "You can, but you have to get a licence and it involves a vigorous ID and history check."
Brandon: "I want my guns now! Everyone needs guns!"
Vera is my favourite fighter now--awesome guy, funny as hell and a generally humble & likable fighter--but I think this sums up the average American. There's this exposure to guns and idea that they're safe and necessary; despite the fact that they are horridly prevalent, gun shot homicides are out of control and they are easily accessible.
