What should I learn to help me transition into MMA?

There are currently no MMA gyms around where I live so what should I learn until I start learning MMA? (I have been doing boxing for around 5 months)

Wrestling, wrestling and more wrestling also start studying various submissions even if you have to learn from DVD's.

BS advice

keep doing what you are good at, and take your physical conditioning, strength and streching to the top level

when you find MMA gym that is near or some opportunity comes up, move to MMA

dont waste time on CD-s and punching/kicking bags. It is better not to have any base before coming to the professional to teach you than having learned something wrong... you might not ever correct those BS habits

I would say wrestling or BJJ. I'm sure people would disagree though.

Find a friend who also wants to learn and get on youtube

The basics of the guard, a few simple sweeps, a handful of submissions and a basic single and double leg TD to go with your striking. I'd say you should box for at least a year before you add the rest of the Muay Thai arsenal. YouTube has tons of great info and its free! Just take your time and get the basics right with lots of repetition. The beauty of BJJ is that if you're not doing it right it doesn't work so you can learn a lot through trial and error with a friend.
There's at least a years worth of getting a grip on the basics before you have to worry about a gym and multiple sparring partners. Focus on repetition and drilling with a friend more so than sparring at first. Just take the time to make sure you're doing it right so you don't drill bad habits.
Have fun!

Also, maybe consider traveling once a month or so to get some technique lessons (bjj, Muay Thai, etc) with a true expert. You can get enough info in one good lesson to keep you busy for a month.

What he's good at? He's been boxing for 6 months :-)
I think the question was what should he study to transition into MMA, not whether he should join a gym or not.
It's true that you shouldn't get deep into technique without guidance, but there are plenty of basics to familiarize yourself with before you just go get your ass beat in an MMA gym

Yeah, your still in the nascent stages of training, you don't even really know boxing yet, so i wouldn't say transition. However, keep your boxing training in context for MMA, maybe don't focus on being so squat and sitting into everything, but learn your range, how to cut angles, and move off of your punches, and keep in mind what you can transition to, and the possibilities... Like, a good uppercut can be a good shot-stopper, or your jab can be used to set up your shot... even if you don't know the intricities of wrestling yet, its you'll be a step ahead mentally.

not really, i would never suggest that

i wanted to say "good at"
meaning, that he should practice boxing techniques that he knows well and polish those skills as much possible, such as head movement, guard, footwork, strikes etc.

as well as physical conditioning, strength, speed...

there is plenty of work to do - not doing some crappy techniques on your own - he could get hurt or learn them the wrong way

I would just keep on training boxing until you have the opportunity for someone to teach your a ground game the right way. The bad part about training via video is that a video can't correct you on things you do not realize you are doing wrong.
