I have both and I'm a little bit older than you are.
I think it comes down to 3 things:
Blu-ray Player, Network and Exclusives
Blu-Ray: Do you have already a Blu-Ray player? Are you interested in Blu-ray? Go PS3
Network - Free basic network/online vs. pay service with no features. How important is online to you? I think the 360 has a better network interface but as someone who is used to playing online for free on PC, it annoys me that you have to pay to play online. Xbox Live isn't too expensive but it still doesn't feel worth it to me unless you REALLY care about achievements and expect to be playing online non-stop.
Exclusives: The PS3 and 360 have a very similar lineup of games. Most games that come out for the 360 come out for the PS3 and vice versa. Then there's the exclusives. You'll have to decide for yourself which are more important. PS3 has titles such as Uncharted and God of War whereas 360 has Gears of War and Halo.
I personally prefer the PS3. I watch a lot of Blu-rays and the PS3 just feels more like a multimedia machine and gives me a lot more options than games. I also prefer free online and don't really care about achievements and what not.
If you decide to get either, it's worth noting that the new PS3 is $270 while the 360 has a price cut coming this Christmas for $250. Either way, they are good systems and I think you'll be happy no matter which you pick.

I've got both, and I'd go with the Xbox, unless you need a Blu Ray player.
The games are pretty much equal, but the 360 is far more user friendly, and has better(albeit more expensive) online functionality . Little things like system updates take half as long to DL and install on 360. Games don't require any sort of installation, and when comparing performance of third party titles, the 360 has the upper hand most of the time.
On the other hand though, the PS3 has more overall functionality.
For gaming: 360
For multimedia device: PS3

I own a PS3 and I really love having it. I have heard that the Xbox is better for online play though.

Serious question: is the Blu Ray player on PS3 really a selling point any more? You can stream HD movies from Netflix and Amazon Prime or other services.

I'm in the same boat.
PS3
free online play
better RPGs
better fantasy adventure games
Metal Gear series
360
better first/third person shooters (Halo, GoW)
$50 a year online play
I haven't played the Halo series since 3, so I'm really anxious to play the rest. Though I also haven't played Metal Gear since 3. And the Last Guardian is a game I'm looking forward to.
The $50 online fee is something to consider, though. I'd like to keep my monthly/yearly costs down. I'll be getting Netflix and Hulu, plus some other subs. I'm leaning PS3.

TS, what's your money situation? Like, do you have money to spare to constantly throw on a system?
The difference between PS3 and 360 is the money you have to invest in a 360 to get the best out of it. Once I stopped getting Christmas gifts and started getting bills, I played my PS3 much more.

Some of us like to own physical copies of movies. Not to mention, streams don't have lossless/master audio like Blu-rays. It's niche for sure but we are out there.

Bingo. I can never get over the joystick placement and lack of triggers on the dualshock. That layout worked for 1 and PS2 but they should have changed it up for this generation. It just doesn't feel right for FPSs like the 360 controller does.

I completely agree, having used both the dual shock 2 and the 360 controllers. But I was just looking at some replacements and found a few that look good.
