DZR a good substitute for Judo?

Background:

I haven't been able to consistently train judo since april (moved away from my school after graduation). There's a danzan ryu/aikido school about 5 minutes away from me that I thought about trying out. I haven't visited the school during class time, but i may within the next week.

Question:

Would DZR (in terms of throwing practice) be a good substitute for Judo training? I just don't want my throwing ability to regress, and we don't practice many throws at my bjj school. they have specific days for dzr and aikido, so i intend to just attend the dzr days.

looking forward to the replies, f12

I went to a seminar by a Danzan Ryu instructor once. He was so full of shit it was comical.

I don't know if that is typical. But that is my one experience.

Absolutely not in any way. Aikido relies upon wristlocks and misdirection throws that usually come off of punches or naive grips. It relies upon compliant partners who let you throw them every time, and has no randori component. It will be absolutely useless for any live grappling scenario. I admit to knowing nothing about DZR, but if they don't spar live regularly then I'd avoid it.

In DZR there's no sparring. I trained it for a few years, and enjoyed the techniques, but without Randori, you're not learning real effectiveness. When I started BJJ I quickly realized that my DZR Judo was missing a vital ingredient: The timing to throw people who resisted. If DZR is all you have access to it's better than nothing, but if you've done real Judo or BJJ for a while, you might get very frustrated in that atmosphere, particularly with the KoolAid drinkers who think they are badass without having ever sparred for real in their life.

I don't know about Danzan Ryu but if the training has some aliveness and if the instructor seems legit that's more than enough.

Anyway is it possible to try the first lesson for free?

yeah first lesson is free. i'll check it out and update this thread afterward. i did see that the school participates in competition, which is why i'm considering it in the first place. i'll see if they do randori.

Get the BJJ guys to start standing with you (if they're not too pussy) and train some throws during open mat. You probably won't get better doing this but you can stop yourself regressing to a fair degree.

And no, Danzan Ryu is total Scheisse.

In short: No!

A little more detail: I am a Cahill's Judo Brown Belt. Mr. Cahill is also a 10th degree black belt in DZR.

The biggest problem I see, and the biggest I hear complained about, is the LACK of resistance. This lack gives you the illusion of being able to throw people.

On a personal note: this is why I do Judo and BJJ... because of the resistance.
