Don't go the noodles, ramen, mac and cheese route. I used to work at a grocery store, and one of the interesting things was watching how people shopped when trying to save money. And that instant noodle college student method is a poor way to go about it, done by people who don't know food, and have almost non-existant cooking skills. It's my observation that it's usually the middle aged immigrant couples that know how to buy the best quality food for the least amount of money.

Peanut butter, bananas, eggs. Seasonal fruits, or whatever's cheap or on sale. Rice, Beans. Bulk protein powder (per serving it's much cheaper than meat). Organ meats (liver, heart). Whatever root vegetables are cheapest. Watch for sales and clip coupons, for example, one of the grocery stores where I live will often have 2-for-1 sales on bacon, pork loins, and lamb.

This is pretty much what I was trying to communicate. I just said it more concisely (and more incorrectly and less eloquently).

Also - not that I would recommend it exactly - I ate a ton of pizza in college, because I lived in a college town and pizza was one of the cheapest things you could find. And I love pizza.

What do you expect your weekly food budget to be roughly? With that info, I think you will get some much more detailed answers. My version of poor college student might be a bit different than yours.

First off, if you dony already know it, but as much food as you can at Aldi. They don't take coupons, but (except for the very rare special) their food is cheaper than other places and just as good.
Second, hot dogs, ground turkey (1.39/lb), small pizzas (.99/ea), eggs, milk, protein powder, baked beans, canned spinach, peanut butter, ravioli, cottage cheese, etc are all cheap but good for lifting nutrition in the right amounts.
Experiment with mixing things. Two of my favorite college meals were things I came up with. The Big John Special is 1lb of ground turkey on the Totino's pizza knockoff, covered with cottage cheese and mozzarella cheese. Usually could get two meals out of that unless I was bulking, then it was one. Hillbilly lasagna is a can of ravioli w a 1/2lb of ground turkey, some canned spinach, cottage cheese and mozarella cheese.
One I discovered post college is 4 hot dogs covered with canned spinach, canned chili, baked beans, cottage cheese, and shredded cheddar cheese.

Source: former poor college student, currently not-wealthy husband with pregnant wife.

I'm also hungry now.

Pretty sure you can live off protein powder and oatmeal, that should be really cheap. Add some eggs, meat, rice, potatoes, milk, peanut butter, celeriac, carrots, and you've got a good diet already. Now just add bacon to everything and it's a delicious diet too!
