That is an interesting exercise. What is it called? Is it a large part of chinese kung fu curriculum?

It could be, but I only ever did hybrid martial arts of different kinds. I was just a part of what we did.

this vid is the same guy doing the pa kua has no long range or punches. He is doing some kind of Tai Chi push hand thingy. Has this person a 52 blocks guy or a kung fu guy?
Very cool. It seemed like a free form chi sao with more emphasis on creating angles. It was fluid and beautiful movement.

Lyte burly is a 52 blocks guy..which is modified boxing...he has two guys he trained from scratch who are currently undefeated in amateur boxing and fight frequently. He also has a b/g in wing chun and bagua which he learned from Wilson Pitts/Roberto Sharpe ; he has competed in full contact lei Tai matches ànd other Kung Fu tourneys/divisions, push hands/etc.

He is saying to effectively use bagua you already have to know how to fight because the principles can enhance and diversify your skills; but you can't be a good fighter using pure bagua...I.e. its a supplemental art.

In his case he uses it to tie up or control guys in the clinch in boxing; in self def or mma you would use it to def counter or initiate takedowns, basically saying bagua IA only effective in one range. He says the same thing about wing chun...saying you use it to hit and hold, ie manipulate an opp to effectively strike him.when fighting in close..you can def counter and initiate offense.

It seems like many eastern arts are very specific in their applicable situations. I have to ask again, is Bagua then clinch and pound? That is what Lyte Burly was doing with it. He says it is a principle. What principle does he mean?

Use of flowing motions and footwork to offset an opponents offense, get them out of position to tie them up and off balance them in a clicnch...by trip or throw. In his case he uses them keep his opposite off balance...out of position so he can tie them up and control them in clinches. Which allows him to limit their aggression and to effectively land attacks or counters entering and escaping the clinch. In a boxing environment.

The "BaGua guy" in that video is a conman and fraud named Ben Hill, so I wouldn't exactly look to him as an example. He's not a legit Baguazhang practicitioner. However, I've met a few guys who are legit practitioners, and I have dabbled in it myself. There's some good stuff to be taken from it, such as footwork, It emphasizes on circular movement and countering menuevers.
