I hope shogun can bring back the leg kicks without trouble

Gus is not a wrestler and wont have that TD threat, shogun can fight at a distance this way while covering his head, much like in the Machida fight.

then a frustrated Gus might want to come in for exchanges.

but ummmmm, the biggest difference in this fight will be cardio and conditioning, who ever got it will have the advantage

Shogun has never really demonstrated the ability to dictate the distance. He relies more upon hooks as opposed to jabs. He's more of a swarmer as opposed to a distance fighter. Add to that the fact that he is susceptible to straight punches and his declining abilities, and there's a significant chance he's gonna lose this fight.
so closing the distance/getting into the pocket isnt controling the distance?hmm...

I agree with the second part but don't believe Gus will be backing away.. He'll counter yes but he has the speed and accuracy to stay in or close to the pocket imo.

If Shogun really wants to close the distance my guess is he will, you look at his career and nobody has ever stopped him from doing so, that includes several tall strikers(Diabate, Overeem, Forrest etc).

The question is I'd say more what will happen when he does, will Gus punish him on the way in? will he have the defence to avoid his big shots? will he have the takedown defence to avoid the takedown and what will happen on the ground if he doesnt?

Shogun via TKO 2nd.

Depends on what Shogun comes too, if the Shogun vs Liddell/Machida comes then Shogun will fight smart and not start brawling then I think Shogun still wins as he will mix it with kicks, punches, knee and takedowns.
Good post until you started making built-in excuses. Just to be clear: There is no such thing as the different Shoguns. It was his opponents that made him look vunerable. These types of statements only serve you to make you look like an NH. With that said, Gustafson has a good chance to win, as well. As already mentioned, keeping the distance, and using his length is key. Shogun has also been shown to be vulnerable when being overwhelmed by a Fighter that picks his opportunities.

How the fuck could you TKO shogun when backing up? To TKO him you have to go for kill hit him with aluminium baseball bat then jump at him praying to god that ref gonna stop it because shogun won't stop coming forward trying to knock you the fuck out.

Gus only have to touch him ones going backwards, or whereverer the heck he is going. If it's a clean enough shot or if Shogun didn't see it coming, he will go down. He has gone down on numerous occassions. That said, he is incredibly tough and has a tremendous chin/resiliency/ability to take punishment and come back.

Gus dropped Thiago Silva going backwards with a sneaky uppercut that didn't seem to have a whole lot behind it but he caught him clean right on the jaw and it was enough to drop Thiago.

Just saying, Gus can easily drop Shogun. TKOing him is a different question, but he can do it. I am a Gus fan and I am fairly worried that he is going to get brutally stopped however.

Inb4 Thiago Silva's chin sucks and Alex still didn't finish him

Gus will be able to control the distance. How? He's MUCH, much faster, for starters (hands and feet). His footwork is 10x better than Shogun's, which is basically non-existent. His constant movement will give Shogun problems. Gus too is a tricky fighter, like Shogun. Both guys are sneaky and tricky. Gustafsson controls distance great and has the KO power to let his opponents know that you can't just rush in and try to close the distance quickly without danger. If you think otherwise then watch the first 30 seconds of Thiago Silva vs Gustafsson (Thiago gets dropped and could've been finished), then watch the rest of that fight to give you an idea. Gus keeps his distance quite easily, picks Thiago apart badly, and toys with him because he's clearly a class above him. Watch the Vladdy fight as Matyushenko tries to jump in to close the distance and land a shot, he gets KO'd with a LEFT JAB. Alex is right handed, yet he had the guy dropped with a left hand, and a jab at that. Vlad ran into it, sure, but it's still some serious power needed to do what he did.

Gustafsson's chin: Thiago (very legit KO power) landed a big shot as Gus was walking into it (BIG right hand) and it did not even wobble Gustafsson one bit. Gustafsson's chin was also proven against multiple Diabate shots (a 4x world muay thai champ) who has killer accuracy and KO power. Gustafsson had no problem outstriking him and was also able to finish him after taking him down and submitting him. Gustafsson's chin is very solid to say the least, granite for all we know.

Grappling: Gustafsson will have the wrestling advantage, both defensive and offensive wrestling. His TDD is much better than Shogun's, he's the bigger fighter who is stronger, and he has 3 types of his own takedowns that he uses quite often. He's also been training wrestling for years and is currently training with an Olympic medalist in Greco-Roman, Jimmy Lidberg. He gave Phil Davis problems and that was 2 years ago. Ever since that fight he started training with him directly (wrestling and grappling mostly). He's also submitted more opponents (3) in his very early career than Shogun (1) has in his entire lengthy career. Gustafsson also has much better reflexes than Shogun and with these reflexes he won't have a problem parrying Shogun's punches, blocking, and evading them altogether. The speed difference is gigantic between them.

Gustafsson wins by T/KO by swarming Shogun after he drops him with a counter or pops him with something unexpected (Gustafsson is great at this).
