Seriously guys? Payak's got an ego sometimes, but this farang talk is silly. It's not a racial slur. It's the Thai word for "not a Thai person." How is that racist? And he uses it when speaking English because it is a relatively well-known term that's much less clumsy than any English alternative. It's only racist if you're in the mood to be offended.

Is this really the first time all of you have heard the word farang?

Even Farangs in Thailand use the term Farangs, so come down.

There are only two kinds of people in this world:

Thais & Farang

If I say something about a non-American not understanding American ways, is that offensive? My language just doesn't happen to have any convenient term for such people, other than words like "foreigner" which carry bad connotations.

Farang does not carry racist connotations. And I would gladly eat a guava in front of a Thai for purposes of jokes. I'm not that damn sensitive.

I agree, not a big deal to get everyones panties in a bunch. In all honesty, I've always wondered what farang ment and why Payak used it so often. Now that I know, it doesn't offend me in the slightest. Payak seems like a pretty solid dude, so WHO CARES!? haha

also, Payak you shouldn't get so incredibly defensive and upset. Myself, and many others, enjoy your insightful and philosophical threads/posts. It's unbecoming of yourself when you react to stuff you should just brush off your shoulders.

His ego took over when peanut unnecessarily insulted him. Also, I've never felt the word "foreigner" in English had a negative connotation unlike "immigrant" or "illegal alien" or something along those lines.

How is farang different than foreigner? Farang just means non-thai correct?

And to be very clear, I am in no way offended being called a farang, nor am I against Payak at all.

To me foreigner sounds a little more derisive than simply immigrant, but I can see that having unwanted connotations in terms of phrases like "illegal immigrant" and the like. Eh. English today is fraught with politically incorrect traps. I don't mind people who are blunt. I try never to mistake bluntness with hatefulness; and though farang might sound odd to our ears, that's just because Thais speak bluntly to foreignors, and see nothing wrong with calling things like they are. They also don't have a problem with playful mockery, no matter how politically incorrect it might seem to us, hence the oft-used joke of getting a farang to ask for a farang, a.k.a. a guava. It's just good fun.

Plus, y'all are privileged white folk, mostly from the US. Are you really complaining about being disadvantaged in any way by your race?
