Really curious why you think theres a whole macho thing going on. The few people who spar with the mentality of hurting their training partners dont last long. Either get fed to the wolves or booted. At first it may appear to be a close knit group, but you have to understand the regulars have been there for years and see people come and go on regular basis. Put in the time and effort and gain the respect of yoru fellow mates. Most people will go out of there way to help and point out when your making a mistake.
Back on topic. Start small and set goals and you will make progress. I came in on the heftier side but over the past year Ive made huge strides. Changed my diet, and work out regiment and the lbs have magically vanished. Lost close to 50 lbs at this point. This is a marathon not a race, it wont happen over night.

TS, that video also raises the question of nutrition. Depending on your particular physiology, working out may not help you lose all the weight you want to lose. If, after your initial performance gains you find that your body is holding you back from training as well and as often as you'd like, you should really consider a change of diet. I started dieting for the first time recently, and quickly lost about 20 pounds that I had gained even while training. And though I've recently stalled out in terms of pounds lost, I look thinner, feel healthier, and I have much more energy for training, all by basically getting good nutrition and cutting out carbs.
There's a certain nutritionist on this forum who will give you a good price and help you along the way if, down the road, you feel you want to lose more weight.
First things first though, stop smoking!

Haha It's Mr. Luis Monda, a.k.a. Sinister, whose got me on a low carb diet to get my stubborn body to start burning this surplus of fat I've been accumulating since I started high school.

Start with training muay thai or something similar a few times per week and add some jogging in the beginning to get used to it. Then increase to 3 times of training per week and if you feel like it, more. Don't forget that you basically control how tired you get yourself. Don't empty yourself at the start of the training, divide it over the lesson. Nothing breaks down fat like a tough martial arts gym.
