UPDATE: Wrestling officially dropped from Olympics. What does this mean for MMA/UFC

UPDATE: Wrestling has been officially dropped from the Olympics for 2020
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/21427455

Sad and idiotic move. I can think of plenty of other sports that need to be dropped. Do we really need all those swimming events?

They only COULD BE removed. The Olympic committee will soon be removing one sport those two are on the short list of sports which receive little interest. They may not be removed but the fact that they're on the short list is kind of scary in itself.

Do you think this will reduce the number of potential cross over athletes or will it force those superior wrestlers into the UFC instead?

Personally I think the stock of wrestlers may be reduced in wrestling without the promise of Olympic gold, however the wrestlers that are there may seek out their fortune in the UFC. What else could they do? Oh yeah WWE I guess.

Uh.. no

They're both established martial arts/sports in themselves that are too big to fail at this point.

There's no way wrestling is getting removed. There is plenty of interest in it globally. Maybe not in Western Europe, but getting rid of it would be ridiculous. That'd be like nixing the 10k and 5k because it has become apparent that it's useless to even try medaling unless you are from East Africa (the incredible Galen Rupp notwithstanding), and therefore it's really just a competition between a few countries.

I can't see wrestling being removed. I could see TKD getting the axe, however.

Obviously many people disagree that's why they are contenders to be removed. IMO they could market them better mostly times that fans can watch. These should stay and I hope they really do.
