Maximus Decimus Meridius is probably the most famous and well known.

Do you like movies about gladiators?

The Roman poet Martial describes a battle between two gladiators named Priscus and Verus, who put on a hell of a show on the inaugural day of the Colosseum. It's the only recorded description of a gladiatorial fight we have. These two were famous, but we have some information about other gladiators through their gravestones (fighting records, type of gladiator they were, etc.)

I knew my classics degree would come in handy someday.

Asteropaeus was probably history's biggest badass; 108 matches in the most highly evolved and lethal of all martial arts/competitions, lost a few, but always made a fight. Strange that he is not celebrated or remembered.

Where did you find out about this Asteropaeus fellow? I'm only aware of the one in the Iliad.

Flamma was one of the most famous gladiators of Rome because he was awarded the rudis no less than four times but still chose to remain a gladiator. The gravestone of Flamma, in Sicily, details the following information:

"Flamma, secutor, lived 30 years, fought 34 times, won 21 times, fought to a draw 9 times, defeated 4 times
a Syrian by nationality."

The gravestone also holds the entry "Delicatus made this for his deserving comrade-in-arms".
Famous Gladiators

This book: Amazon.com: The Gladiators: History's Most Deadly Sport (9780312364021): Fik Meijer: Books

It's a great primer on the subject, and some of the anecdotes are amazing.
