What do joker / clown tattoos represent?

I know that a lot of Hispanic / Latino gang members of various kinds (Surenos, MS13, etc) sport joker and clown tattoos but joker images also seem to be a part of "civilian" west coast urban culture (as seen on "civilian" tattoos, Joker Brand clothing, etc).

I've tried to Google the significance of the joker symbol in tattoo culture but I can only find generic stuff; not stuff related specifically to Hispanic / Latino culture, west coast urban culture, etc.

Post'em if you got'em.

They're really, really into ICP. Only the ultra hardcore guys got'em tho.

I bet cops have a whole database of gang realtated tatts... that would be interesting to see.

Some gangs just adopt an evil clown as their symbol, just like some have a baby devil, a bulldog...

It is a west coast thing because around here the gang members wear the..hmm don't know what its called but its like the opera mask happy/sad face thing.....

a Philosophical view and lifestyle comonly associated with Latino culture this is apparent in murals tatoos and latin art that can be found in the Los angeles area and california,
"the Joker is always smilling no matter if the card is faced down, when your cards are played and it looks as though u are losing the game remember this."

this philosophy encourages the act of appearing happy or somewhat not troubled as this term orriginated in the East LA barrio's where gang life is apparent as with troubles braught uppon by this sort of situation.
