Why do they check behind a fighter's ears?

Hi new to sherdog but have been watching MMA for awhile.

I have a question. Before a fighter enters the ring in UFC a person will do a quick safety check.

Now I understand the process of checking the gloves, applying the vaseline to the face, checking the feet and making sure they are wearing a cup, but I was wondering why they check behind the ears?

I tried googling this but an answer i came up with was they do it "to make sure the ears have no training damage." Im not sure what that means.

because they seem to put their thumb back there and rub, I dont really see anyone making a fighter turn their head to the side so they can check the ear for bruising or small tears or something.

So why do they check behind the ear? do they just rub the ear to see if the fighter feels pain? has anyone been disqualified for coming in with ear bruising?

If it happens they just wipe it off theres not much in the way of consequences for that its just delays the start of the match by a few minutes

The greasing sounds right but i also remember the refs initially having a little problem in the hendo vs Rampage fight when Hendo had a cut in his ear.

oh k thanks guys. I understood why they checked the back of the neck because of greasing, but I didn't think if someone dabbed some oil on the back of their ear, that it would really make a difference since most of the locks involved the neck. And in Muay Thai the back of the head is gripped for the plum.

there was a video of an old Houston Alexander fight

<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/08IduTW46cw&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/08IduTW46cw&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

where the opponent comes into the ring greased but no one checks him. Then Houston refuses to fight and around the 7:00 mark you can hear him yelling at Chuck Parmalee that hes greased. He says "you got grease on ya" and then points to his stomach.

Plus the dude looks way too shiny getting into the ring.
