Should the UFC be moving toward more cross divisional, or catchweight fights?
It seems like fighters are willing to switch divisions if it gets them into money making fights. There's a long history of this. Just recently we see Chael, Vitor, Diaz, and now Rashad talking about moving divisions if it means a big fight.
I've always thought the belts were getting in the way of big fights we all want to see. Anderson would have been taking more fights at 205 if Dana didn't demand that he give up his belt. Now that 5 round non-title fights are here I don't see why the UFC doesn't allow more movement between divisions.
The belts are a nice marketing gimmick, but they're really getting in the way now it seems. Instead of Jones vs Vitor we could have a non title Jones vs Kongo fight. Instead of Anderson vs Chump we could have Shogun vs Anderson. The fighters want the belts only because the belts put them in the big fights, but if they can just get a big fight the belt becomes irrelevant.
Give us fans what we want, and we'll pay every time. Trying to sell us uncompetitive match-ups for stupid belts is a good way to set the wrong kind of ppv records.
