Look at the Gif.

Chael's chin was tucked. The top of the knee met his chin and the rest of it was shucked down to the solar plexus.

I thought it was legal the first time I saw it and the replay showed us that it was indeed legal.

Obviously he was aiming for the chest before he jumped into it but I really doubt he reacted in midair to the micro-positioning of Chael's chin as your post implies.

Anderson gambled with his belt and he won. Optimal strategy is much different: "Motion for Chael to get up, matrix KO, profit". Chael was done at that point. No need to let an errant ref decision change your legendary status.
You can't change trajectory or momentum very easily, but you can control the angle your knee is at, which Anderson has the speed and reflexes for. Besides, I'm just telling you what happens frame by frame in HD on a big screen. Its there for anyone to check if they don't believe me.

This also played a big part on our reactions when it happend, along of course with the camera angle at the moment.

if it were the other way around and Sonnen threw the exact same knee at Siva and won the fight Sherdog would have exploded. fortunately people hate Sonnen so its ok. it landed just below his face because Chael blocked it. he went for an illegal knee but it just happened to land elsewhere.

Silva couldn't knee the broad side of a barn.

This picture is so good.

Anderson digging his knee into Sonnen who is just sitting against the cage. The two commentators with completely different reactions. It's just perfect. So brutal but funny at the same time.

Great eyes to see it was completely to the body. I guess we should be glad Joe Silva isn't a ref or he'd have ruined that main event (though I'm half kidding because I understand he'd have a better view in the cage).
Sure, it was an excellent call on the knee, but the ref shit the bed not deducting a point for that 15 seconds of shorts holding by silva.
