To me that looks like challenger Gatekeeper material, no that of a top10 HW...

I think it sucks that he is constantly in the top 10, but the HW division is extremely weak when it comes to rankings, most of the guys ranked below Mir who could "probably" beat him still don't have more noteable wins in the last couple of years, so how do you rank them higher? On potential?

Because for years he's been either fighting freaks, or guys outside his weight division, or guys in the bottom end of the HW top 10. He's been in danger of losing his top rank position for years...but until he actually lost you couldn't rationally remove him from the top. He's still the GOAT and will be for a LONG time...but he does not deserve to be at the top rank of the division.
Fedor doesn't even give a shit about all this, why should we?

There are a lot of fighters that could beat Frank Mir but there are not a lot of fighters that have beaten better guys than Frank Mir. Overeem's biggest win is Rogers and has done very little to note outside that win, Silva's only decent win is over Arlovski and I'm not even sure Arlovski was ranked by anyone when they fought and Nelson has never beaten a top 10 opponent. Sorry TS but your examples are very flawed. Mir has recently beaten Cro Cop, Big Nog, Kongo and Lesnar. It's not exactly a who's who but it's enough to justify a spot in the top 10 at the moment.

Overeem is an unproven can crusher in mma, he's beaten no one of significance. Roy Nelson has beaten no one important. You have to actually beat credible competiton to be ranked. Deal with it.

this is a retarded statement , the fact is that Overeem is not the same one he used to be when he fought chuck and rua ,look at his previous fights and how he improved in every aspect fo fighting.Yea , no one in the UFc would have a slim chance at beating him including cain velasquez.
Overeem is a fighter who uses his strength in his favor unlike brock who does not any fucking skills set , hes good in both standup and the ground game .

I think Alistair would likely beat Mir, but that isn't the point. Alistair has had 1 semi-decent win since moving to hw. Even with Mir's losses to the top guys, wins over Kongo, Cro Cop, and Nog still do more for a ranking than Goodridge, Rogers, and Buentello.
If I made a list of hws according to who I think is the best, Mir would be at the tail end of the top 10, if he made the list at all. Rankings aren't created like that, though.

Rank should be based HEAVILY and PRIMARILY on a fighters recent activity inside that division.
Sherdog's list is about RANK...and I think they got it right.
|
You mean, fighters should be ranked on the basis of what they've done, not what a fan-base thinks they're capable of doing?
You mean that Alistair Overeem isn't #1 in the world with a run of victories over Tae Hyun Lee, Mark Hunt, Gary Goodridge, Tony Sylvester, James Thompson, Kazuyuki Fujita, and Brett Rogers? But he has muscles...and K-1 striking!
I refuse to believe that Frank Mir's wins over Antoni Hardonk, Brock Lesnar, Big Nog, Cheick Kongo, and CroCop over the same time period are in any way, shape, or form comparable to what Alistair has done. Because he has K-1 level striking. And he's jacked.
And we all know he'd obviously beat every heavyweight out there right now, including Mir, which is why there's no need to have him face a top-tier heavyweight.

You have to understand how shallow the hw division actually is. One top 10 win will put a guy in the top 10 for a couple fights at the least....shoot, look at Brett Rogers. Guys like Nelson aren't going to bump ranked fighters off the list by beating unranked opponents (and losing to a ranked one).
Look at the history of the division. Sergei was seen as a top 5 hw for beating Ninja and Schilt....and losing to Nog. Lists had Aleks E as high as 6, and he only really beat Sergei (lost to pretty much every other ranked fighter). Arlovski was considered a top 10 guy after beating Cabbage and Sylvia, and Mir got ranked after Sims, Tank, and Sylvia. Vera got up there by running through Mir. Couture was 5 years removed from the hw division, where his last win was over Rizzo, and he was up in the top 10 after beating Sylvia. Likewise, Gonzaga got his spot by getting past Cro Cop. The list goes on. It's tough to boot Mir off the list when he beat the #2 hw in the world not too long ago.
