Icon3 Discussion on the size of the UFC cage (pics)

Let's compare the sizes of three things: UFC cage, WEC cage, and a professional boxing ring used as a control to compare against the MMA cages.

Here are all three compared, sized to scale:

Here are the three layered on top of each other:

Here is the 750 square feet of the UFC cage if it was square-shaped, compared to a the boxing ring:

And here is the 482 square feet of the WEC cage if it was square-shaped, compared to a boxing ring:

Now, from these accurately-scaled shapes, you can see that the size of the UFC cage is much, much bigger than both the WEC cage and a professional boxing ring.

Would a smaller cage make UFC fights more engaging and more exciting?

It seems like WEC fights were ALWAYS action-packed. Yet those same WEC fighters now fight in the UFC and they aren't nearly as action-packed. What changed?

Could it be the larger cage?

Should the UFC adopt a smaller cage size, like that of the WEC?

Here are shots from a boxing ring and UFC cage overhead:

It would only cause more wrestling and wall and stalling which you would complain about. Diaz lost, get over it.

No one has ever brought up the fact that a smaller cage = harder to see from the live fans' perspective. We need that space so the padded bars won't be every other 4 feet (or whatever it would be). More bars = less viewable area.

This has nothing to do with Diaz.

You know, people have been talking about this stuff for years.

i admire your intelligent discussion and analysis. with that, still, we should not change the size of the UFC ring just because Nick Diaz, his coach, and his fans are mad.

What's to stop how far we go with making the ring smaller then? Why not make it 5x5 with spikes on the mat so that the fighters have no choice but stand and brawl.
