Average Height by Weight Class

I was curious while creating fighters in UFC Undisputed 3 and did some Googling which led me to this thread, which didn't seem to have any math to back anything up. So I wandered over to here and started crunching out numbers in an Excel spreadsheet and averaging the heights for myself. Where heights weren't provided on ufc.com, I used my best Google-fu and found the heights via Sherdog or Wikipedia. Heights were all converted into inches, averaged, and then converted back into (roughly) X'Y" - in the case where the average fell between two measurements (i.e. 5'8 11/64"), a range is given of 5'8"-5'9" and the actual measurement given in parenthesis. I can provide the spreadsheet if anyone wants to see the numbers, but it's pretty standard/boring.

TL;DR - here's the average heights by weight class (for the UFC fighters listed here). (Weights are the cutoffs, for those who don't know.)

Heavyweight(265 lbs): 6'3"-6'4" (6'3 3⁄16")---[Champion: Junior Dos Santos, 6'4"]
Light Heavyweight(205 lbs): 6'2"-------------[Champion: Jon Jones, 6'4"]
Middleweight(185 lbs): 6'0"-6'1" (6'0 57⁄64")--[Champion: Anderson Silva, 6'2"]
Welterweight(170 lbs): 5'11"-6'0" (5'11 5⁄64")-[Champion: Georges St-Pierre, 5'11"]
Lightweight(155 lbs): 5'9"-5'10" (5'9 17⁄32")---[Champion: Benson Henderson, 5'9"]
Featherweight(145 lbs): 5'8"-5'9" (5'8 11⁄64")-[Champion: Jose Aldo, 5'7"]
Bantamweight(135 lbs): 5'7"------------------[Champion: Dominick Cruz, 5'8"]
Flyweight(125 lbs): 5'4"-----------------------[Champion: ???]

In case you're wondering, the average height of all fighters in the UFC is 5'10 11⁄16"

EDIT: By request, min-max for each group:
Heavyweight: [Mark Hunt] 5'10" - 6'11" [Stefan Struve]
Light Heavyweight: [Rashad Evans/Stanislav Nedkov] 5'11" - 6'6" [Cyrille Diabate]
Middleweight: [Rousimar Palhares] 5'8" - 6'3 1/2" [Magnus Cedenblad]
Welterweight: [Matt Serra] 5'6" - 6'3" [Seth Baczynski]
Lightweight: [Frankie Edgar/Sean Sherk] 5'6" - 6'2" [TJ O'Brien/Tim Means]
Featherweight: [Marcus Brimage] 5'4" - 6'1" [George Roop/Cole Miller/Pablo Garza]
Bantamweight: [Chris Cariaso] 5'3" - 5'11" [Walel Watson]
Flyweight: [Half the division] 5'3" - 5'6" [Darren Uyenoyama]

Per request, the Median:
Heavyweight: 6'4"
Light Heavyweight: 6'2"
Middleweight: 6'1"
Welterweight: 5'11"
Lightweight: 5'9"
Featherweight: 5'8"
Bantamweight: 5'7"
Flyweight: 5'3 1/2"

And for the sake of completeness, here's the Mode:

Heavyweight: 6'4"
Light Heavyweight: 6'2"
Middleweight: 6'0"
Welterweight: 6'0"
Lightweight: 5'10"
Featherweight: 5'8"
Bantamweight: 5'6"
Flyweight: 5'3"

(FYI: Kendall Grove isn't included in any of these because he's not listed officially on the UFC rosters anymore)

I hope somebody finds this information useful. If there's any other stats somebody's interested in seeing data for, let me know - I have a lot of free time and like playing with numbers.

These numbers show another issue with weight classes. Height/reach

Take me for example. My fighting weight is 175-180 LBS which is between Welter and Middle weights. I am only 5'4''. The reach advantage that all people in my division have over me deters me from actually training in MMA.

Height averages are different for MMA, Boxing and Muay Thai.

Did you take it to the account that at least in UFC (a lot of others orgs too, though) almost everyone traditionally get's 1 bonus inch to their heights when he signs the contract?

Cause its sadly true, and therefore it's bloody hard to make viable statistic, based on shoddy data....

I didn't include names in my spreadsheet, so it'll take me a minute to sort through the UFC website again, but it should be updated in just a couple minutes.

Well then just subtract an inch from all of the totals

How about you fight at 155 then? You are not Paul Harris.

A lot of interesting medical cases.
