I thought it deserved it's own countdown. This is big. Perhaps bigger than many are willing to accept.

So let's start the countdown for what we hope may change boxing as we know it. On my clock there are seven days remaining. In an hour there will be six

May 26 - Antonio Castro, son of the former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, has predicted the country's boxers will be successful the professional ranks after it ended its draconian rule of over 50 years to stop fighters staying amateur.

Professional boxing was effectively banned in Cuba in 1962 because Fidel Castro regarded it as both corrupt and corrupting, while authorities there deemed it is too dangerous and unsafe.

The ban left amateur boxing to become one of the most popular and successful sports in the Caribbean island in recent years, and the country is the second most successful boxing nation at the Olympic Games, with an incredible 67 medals, including 34 golds, behind only the United States.

But with International Boxing Association (AIBA) looking to turn boxing at the Olympics professional by the next Games at Rio 2016, Cuba ended their ban in April this year as they signed up to season four of the World Series of Boxing WSB, which is due to begin in November.

The WSB is currently the only competition in the world that allows boxers to fight professionally, without headguards, and still retain their Olympic eligibility.

The WSB will shortly link up with a new tournament - AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) - in another competition Cuba are set to sign up to.

"Boxing has always been one of the biggest sports in Cuba," Antonio Castro told insidethegames.

"We have been very strong in the sport at the Olympic Games for a long time.

"Now that there are changes to boxing at the Olympics with this new professional-style boxing, we are ready to adapt and I think we will continue our success.

"Going to the Olympics has always been the biggest goal of Cuban boxers and that will not change.

"I am sure that we will remain one of the strongest boxing nations at the Olympics through these changes."

Light welterweight Roniel Iglesias was one of Cuba’s two boxing gold medallists at the London 2012 Olympic Games

Castro, a surgeon by profession, was chief medical officer for the Cuban Olympic team at London 2012 while he is also vice-president of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) and helping spearhead the sport's bid to make the 2020 Olympics.

He met with AIBA President C K Wu earlier this year in Cuba to discuss the country joining the WSB and the APB and admitted he was impressed with plan.

"I like what the AIBA President has planned for boxing and his idea to make the sport professional at the Olympic Games," Castro said.

"He is a very smart man with a very clear idea of what he wants to do for his sport and Cuba is happy to be involved in the project."

In recent history, Cuba produced arguably the greatest Olympic boxer ever in heavyweight Teófilo Stevenson, who won three gold medals at three consecutive Games from 1972 to 1980, but never turned professional despite several huge offers.

At London 2012, the country claimed four boxing medals with flyweight Robeisy Ramírez and light welterweight Roniel Iglesias taking gold medals and bantamweight Lázaro Álvarez and lightweight Yasniel Toledo picking up bronze medals.

It's something that's always bugged me. People like to throw this around to show how tough the world is boxing is. It's also, or at least used to be, one of the things MMA fans would try say to put boxing down. They like to say if a boxer loses then it's all over. People, casuals especially, seem to be under the impression that if you lose you get kicked out lock and key.

But when exactly is that ever even the case? First of all if you lose early in your career people tend to be more lenient about your inexperience. If you lose later they say you can still bounce back.

I have never seen a case in boxing where someone has lost (even a few times straight) and simply been asked to leave and never return. Many don't even fall down in the ranks that much. There have been boxers who started off with losing streaks who went on to have great careers.

Manny was beat early in his career, becomes superstar. Gets KO'd by Juan, proceeds to host major PPV event in China.
Wlad and Vitali have severe losses they recovered from.
Bute loses to Froch, proceeds to sell out arena in Canada and return to title contention.
Froch loses to Ward, somehow becomes bigger than he's ever been straight after.
Chisora "loses" to Helenius - gets world title shot
Khan loses twice in a row - returns to title contention immediately
Magee loses to Bute, gets massive payday against Kessler
Mosley, loses to Mayweather, gets sueperfight with Manny which he loses and gets super fight with Canelo.
Cotto loses to Trout, will likely return to title contention soon
Haye loses to Carl Thompson early in his career - becomes unified cruiser champ. Haye then loses to Wlad, gets major PPV fight with Chisora, contract with sky and the potential for a Klitcshko rematch in future.
Price loses to Tony Thompson, the rematch will likely be bigger and more profitable
Ortiz loses to Mayweather, gets title eliminator against Lopez, loses to Lopez, goes on Dancing with the Stars and will likely come back even bigger.

Now I know people are going to say well these are just the big names but occurrences like this happen all across the board. A good example of this are minor fighters with losing records getting appearances on Prizefighter. I really can't recall any case were one loss actually ended a boxers entire career.

BTW boxers quitting under their own steam don't count e.g Hatton ... who by the way made a massive comeback and would have found a title in his hands if he had done better. Something like Prince doesn't count either since he himself gave up despite offers for him to make a comeback.

Unfortunately, due to time constraints with bjj, I'd only be able to do boxing 3 days a week (around 1 hour and a half to 2 hours each time). Would this be sufficient enough to defend myself on the street (hypothetical question, I know...)?
I'm a little iffy about becoming a jack of all trades...but I can't seem to give up either or now.

I am from a karate background, but am moving over to more mma style training. As such I am switching to boxing as my main striking art.

However, not being used to throwing a hook, I have noticed that my right hook is far far more powerful than my left (lead) hook.

I had read this should be the other way round. Is this true? And if so, any tips on how to improve my left?

Many thanks.
Mosley can't beat guys like Mayweather or Manny but it's probable that he can win another title if he trains hard, look at Hopkins, he's beating top competition at 48. that last fight proved that Mosley was no dead beat and he came back strong after 3 horrendous fights.
