well, I will describe shortly my experience with acupuncture...

If you know me from the forum, you will know by now that im no kung fu white magic ninja believer, so I have no bias towards Chinese oriental stuff...

My classmate a couple of months ago told me that he went to an acupuncturist to have him treat an injury, and told me it works, Ive been dealing with knee problems and recently a couple of weeks ago, my instructor gave me an ankle sprain from a toe hold, pretty painful... So I started physiotherapy the next day, It kind of went well at the beginning but by the 12th session, my ankle was still fucked up, I mean I could walk no problem, but anything close to turn my foot to the inside it was just impossible, hurt like a bitch, note that I halted my training all during this time... So, after talking again to my mate, I decided to give it a go... Went to the acupuncturist a week ago, on Wednesday, talked to the acupuncturist about both of my problems, ankle and knee, he asked me if I have gone to the doc and see if something was not broken... So after a while, he read some stuff, and started placing the needles, it hurt in some places, in some not, it was a hard to define pain, internal I guess, nothing too bad, the whole session lasted about 45 to 1 hour, I asked him if that was it, no need for another session, which he reply with, call my son tomorrow and see how you feel... (his son is the one taking the appointments, he is korean and doesnt talk much spanish) I got out of his office and though, shit what a waste of money, my foot was exactly like it was before... Well, after a couple of hours, I started trying to move my foot, moving it to the inside, a toe hold motion we can say, it obviously still hurt, but to my surprise, I was able to move to a certain point, before I had no range of motion to the inside, now I was able to do it, I was pretty surprise, at night time I went to my last physiotherapy session, by that time my range of motion was at least 30% better than what it was before the acupuncture session (I had the session at noon). Next day, it was even better! at least 60% better! 2 days after, on saturday I went to train, my foot was incredible much better, still hurt a lot with some motions though, I was rolling very carefully and only in some positions... Well, today I went to the second acupuncture session, and by now, I can really tell you, that right now I am at 90% at least, I still have a long way I think to be able to receive a foot lock of any kind, but I feel almost normal! no more physiotherapy was done after that Wednesday (the same day of my first acupuncture session).

Regarding my knee problems. I have a posterior crossed ligament inflammation (this I just google translated because I dont know the name in english) my knee have been giving me problems back and forth for quite a while, but now, I feel incredible!

All in all, this shit works, highly recommended to anyone, it aint oil snake, thats for sure...

I was taught this technique years ago, and it is a ton of fun to pull off live. The idea of revisiting it came to me the other day when attacking an omoplata. Well, it didn't pan out in that particular moment, but I would like to read others opinions on the technique.

Do you use the technique, why or why not?

If you do use it, how often do you go to it? What are your triggers for attacking it? It certainly seems to me to be fairly reliant on timing.

How do you finish the sweep when you get to both knees? I was taught to drive back against the shin with the lat while simply blocking the heel, causing them to fall over. This is how it seems Renzo is finishing the sweep in this video.

I have also been, I think, missing the hook, or bite with the leg that stays in contact with their side. Perhaps a detail that didn't stick into my white belt brain when I was taught this the first (and only) time. One other thing I can take from it is his transfer of the leg from hand to hand. Very tight, and controlled, in order to ensure the pass.

There is certainly a dearth of good video of this technique out there. Most seem to suggest finishing by standing up, rather than driving back.
One alternative finish that stood out to me was this.

Despite that, no other video specifically addresses passing from here, and kind of leave it up in the air as to what you wanna do to pass, which to me strongly seems like a scramble situation. Renzo at least emphasizes the transition of the grip from the sweeping arm to the other arm and then coming around for the pass.

Any other good videos, or alternative names for this technique, post em up. I feel like I have seen other videos that were good, but may have been named something else.

Also, most videos show this as no gi, but I train almost exclusively in a gi. It seems that if they maintain a grip on your collar, this would be a no go, and a grip on your far (circling over the head) leg would also stop the roll. So it might seem then that one of the triggers for the technique should be if they are putting both hands to your near side leg to try to pressure open the guard.

Anyways, with the omoplata coming back in vogue, and the prevalence of standing guard passes, it seems like the metagame is ripe for this old school sweep to see some use. The movement is also very much similar to many of the inversions and rolls we are seeing now in DLR berimbolo type play. Decent little drill to show this similarity.

I am also wondering if this wouldn't be something you would switch to when the opponent is effectively denying your DLR hook and staying square to you.

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:

For bonus lols, check out Ari's Star Sweep 2.0, and compare it to Renzo's. He does just about everything wrong, and I think it may perhaps rival the Anaconda Redux for worst subs 101 video by Ari.

Anyway, chuckles aside, please to be discussing techniques, yes.

Anyone remember the match between Couture and Jacare a couple of years back? It was no where near the stall-fest that Brendan orchestrated but there are still some similarities. I remember this match being brought up every time a Randy vs Fedor thread popped up. "But Randy grappled Jacare to a draw, how could Fedor armbar him", would be a popular statement thrown around during that time period.

I'm just wanting to draw some correlation between the Schuab debacle and the Couture's match with Souza. Both matches had physically larger MMA fighters pitted against smaller top-level BJJ competitors under a special rules setting. In both instances the MMA fighter looked to stifle the BJJ player more so than imposing their own submission game. The key difference is Randy actually entered Jacare's guard and stalled out more there, while Schuab avoided all contact besides pushes to the head.

Do you think the reception of both fights were different because of each competitors differing level of popularity? Randy is a huge fan favorite, so many considered his 'draw' with Jacare something of a moral victory and his ability to 'stifle' to a BJJ player. However, under most competition rules Randy would have lost on points; but his match with Jacare was under a special setting where an automatic draw was in place if there was no submission.

TL, DR:

Both fights share many similarities, with Randy being the more active of the two, but does popularity affect reception?
